Review ~ Exploited (Zero Day, #1) by A. Meredith Walters

Exploited (Zero Day, #1)
eARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Release Date: July 25th 2017

Publisher: Loveswept, Random House

Description:
At first glance, I’m nothing out of the ordinary. I am a daughter. A sister. A friend. When you look at me you won’t see anything that warrants suspicion. I don’t look like a criminal.

My name is Hannah Whalen, but most people know me as freed0mov3rdr1v3, or “Freedom Overdrive”—one of the world’s most prolific and notorious hacktivists. My goal—my purpose—is to shed light on the evil that lurks behind the corporate and government lies we have been force-fed for too long.

My story begins with the best possible intention. Devoting my life to exposing the corrupt. The dishonest. The unethical. For that, they label me a cyber-terrorist. Wanted by the FBI, I’ve always been one step ahead.

Until I fell in love.

Because I’m sleeping with the man who’s hunting me. And he has no idea that I am his prey. Now I have to decide what’s more important: my freedom or my heart.

My Opinion

As soon as I saw the blurb for this book I needed to have it. I love hacker books, but I didn't know what I'd get, since I've never read anything by this author before. As soon as I picked it up to start reading, though, I knew I'd love it.

Exploited was an engaging read. From the first page to the last, it kept me hooked and I struggle to put it down. Walters balanced tech jargon and the hacker side of things well with normalcy to create a book that sounded believable but wasn't overly complex. It remained easy to follow and the characters' emotions shone over everything else to keep me interested. I commend her for creating an authentic book without compromising on the plot or pace.

I won't say to much about the characters as I don't want to give anything away. However, I loved Hannah and Mason. I thought they complimented each other well and the secrets they kept created a good amount of tension as I waited for everything to boil over. I enjoyed how their romance developed and I connected with both of them emotionally.

Now, I will warn you this book ends in a major cliffhanger. I knew this going in so it doesn't bother me--well not that much. I'm dying to read the concluding book Aftermath and I hope it's releasing in the fall like it states in the back of book rather than January 2018 like it say on Amazon. No doubt I will probably have to wait until January, but it's on my list of titles to look out for.

Overall, Exploited was an engaging, fast-paced, and exciting read. The romance is mixed perfectly with the tension and I couldn't put it down. I would highly recommend!

Review ~ The Darkest Sunrise (The Darkest Sunrise #1) by Aly Martinez

The Darkest Sunrise (The Darkest Sunrise, #1)
eARC received via InkSlinger PR in exchange for an honest review

Release Date: July 13th 2017

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.
“You’re pregnant.”
“It’s a boy.”
“Your son needs a heart transplant.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun.
Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.
“He’s gone.”
For ten years, the darkness consumed me.
In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

My Opinion

This author can be a bit hit or miss for me. I found her via a book signing and started with The Fall Up. If you saw my review for this book, I enjoyed it, but didn't love it. However, after seeing the buzz about her Retrieval duet, I gave her another chance, picked up those books, and absolutely loved them. For that reason, I decided to take a chance on this duet and I'm so glad I did.

I requested The Darkest Sunrise, but wasn't sure what I was getting into. What I got was an emotional read about two sets of people struggling to piece themselves back together after horrible events. Through their pain and darkness, they find each other and help each other through the tough time.

Martinez's writing in the book is beautiful. Everything flows, it kept me hooked, and I finished this book much too quickly. It reminded me of her Retrieval series in structure, so if you're a fan of that definitely check this out. It had the same tone and amount of emotion.

What I really loved though was the humour brought to this book. While it is a sad, intense, and emotional read, the author did a great job of injecting lighter scenes that balanced out the bad. It made the characters more likeable and developed the connection between them.

Overall, this is definitely one of the better books by this author. I would highly recommend it and I can't wait to conclude the duet in book 2.

Now I have a chance to make it right, but she's being stubborn. It used to be cute, but this time it can get her killed.

Boston's latest serial killer has his sights set on the only woman I have ever truly loved, and I will keep her safe even if it pisses her off, even if she hates me for it.

All bets are off this time. I want her. He wants her. Only one of us will win.

And I never fucking lose.

~ Angelique

He left me broken, shattered. Pain unlike any I’ve ever felt filled me in the wake of his absence.

Six years later, I thought I’d finally gotten over him and moved on.

But Fate is a tricky bitch. She likes to torture us.

She brought Kade back to me, but I won’t ever hurt like that again.

I just have to stay out of his bed until this is over.

Fate is a cruel, cruel bitch.

My Opinion

I didn't really know what to expect from this book. I've been eager to read it since I finished Touch Me Not when it was released so I vaguely knew what this author's writing would be like, yet I didn't know what the story would entail so I went into this blind.

The Sinner's Touch held my attention from start to finish. It was darker than what I remember the first book being, yet I couldn't put it down. I won't give too much away as suspense is a key factor in this book, but I didn't see some of the twists coming. The book kept me on my toes and wanting to find out more.

As for the characters, I thought in general they were well developed. I liked the history and the second chance element. However, I would have liked Kade to do more work--although I guess that's going to be the point of book 2.

My only minor issue was the writing did become a bit confusing at times because of the head hopping. Written in third person it was okay until characters' thoughts started to mix. I got used to the style the more I read, but at the start it was a little jarring. I think scene breaks could have helped the clarity.

Overall I enjoyed this read. It does get quite dark and graphic at times so it might not be for everyone, yet it held my attention well and I'm looking forward to reading more romances by this author.

Review ~ Wicked Intentions (Wicked Games #3) by J.T. Geissinger

Wicked Intentions (Wicked Games #3)eARC received via InkSlinger PR in exchange for an honest review

Release Date: July 11th 2017

Publisher: Jack's House Publishing LLC

Description:
Ex special-ops officer and security expert Ryan McLean is getting a much-needed vacation. In the Caribbean for his best friend's wedding, his plans include nothing more strenuous than working on his tan. But when he meets a beautiful woman in the hotel bar, their connection is immediate and intense, and they spend a passionate night together with pleasure as their only goal.

Until Ryan wakes the following morning to discover the beautiful woman has vanished, along with millions worth of jewels from the safe of the Saudi prince staying in the suite next door. Realizing he was duped, Ryan becomes determined to find the mystery woman and bring her to justice. If only he could forget how explosive their chemistry was, how her kisses drove him wild like no other woman before.

A notorious thief known to authorities only as the Dragonfly, Mariana Lora only has one more score to settle until she can retire, but the sexy-as-hell Marine she spent one explosive tropical night with is hot on her heels at every turn. She has to outwit him to stay out of jail, but fighting their magnetic attraction soon becomes a game neither one of them can resist.

When Mariana’s last job goes dangerously wrong and she needs Connor’s help to survive, he has to decide if their game of cat and mouse is only a game, or if he can trust this beautiful thief with something no woman has ever stolen: his heart.

My Opinion

I only discovered this author a few months ago when I picked up one of her books for free on Amazon. If you saw my review for that book then you'll know that I loved it and couldn't believe I hadn't heard of JT before. Therefore, when I saw the tour request for this book I couldn't not sign up.

This book had everything I love in it and more. I loved both of the characters and how they constantly tried to outmanoeuvre each other. I especially loved Mariana. She was strong and independent. As a thief I wasn't sure I'd like her, but she won me over with her cunning and her story. I liked the twist that she was the criminal, and I liked the fact that she constantly pulled the rug out from beneath Ryan who was meant to be one of the best in the security world. Their personalities clashed to create humour and blended to create chemistry. I thought the author did a great job of balancing them both to create a fast-paced and enjoyable read.

As for the plot, it held my attention well and I found the book hard to put down. The end section lost me for a few chapters where the pace seemed to slow, but it won me back over in the end and I didn't want the epilogue to end.

Overall, I will definitely be looking at the books I haven't read by this author and looking out for new releases. I would highly recommend this book.

Review ~ I Need You Tonight (Pushing Limits, #3) by Stina Lindenblatt

I Need You Tonight (Pushing Limits, #3)
eARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Release Date: July 11th 2017

Publisher: Loveswept

Description:
Old habits die hard. But in this sexy, heartwarming romance, a musician who’s addicted to the temptations of the road falls for a good girl who makes him want to clean up his act.

Mason Dell’s band, Pushing Limits, is a sensation, and he’s having a blast on their biggest tour yet. Then he gets a call from his best friend, who’s in the Navy, asking him to find out why his sister isn’t answering her phone. The dude once saved Mason’s life from a suicide attempt related to a gambling problem—so the two-and-a-half hour drive from L.A. to her small town is nothing.

What he finds is a sweet, successful boutique owner who’s too busy to notice when her phone dies. Nicole McCormick has nothing better to do than work. She’s bored of all the men she’s been dating: stable, career-oriented guys who are nothing like her destructive father. Mason’s is a breath of fresh bad-boy air. Their sexual connection is explosive, and with her shop undergoing renovations, Nicole even joins Pushing Limits on the road. But when Mason falls off the wagon, that’s one path she swore she’d never go down again.

While Nicole picks up her broken heart and heads home, Mason misses her like crazy. Although he wants to forge a future with her, he just doesn’t know how to leave the past behind. But for love, it’s time to learn.

My Opinion

Having received an ARC of book 2 in this series last year and loving it, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. Although Jared and Callie still remain my favourite, this book didn't disappoint and I sped trough it faster than I expected and wanted.

Mason and Nicole were interesting characters. I liked how they met and fell for each other. It was sweet and showed the good guy side to Mason. I thought the two of them worked well together to create an engaging romance where I rooted for them entire way through.

In general I liked the way the plot panned out. If I'm honest I wasn't a fan of the ending before the epilogue. A couple of things were rushed to be tied up and I wasn't keen on a few of the characters' choices. However, for the mostpart it was an enjoyable read.

Overall, although I still loved book 2 more, this one definitely lived up to the author's style and held my attention. It was a sweet and easy romance.

The Pact by Karina Halle

The Pact
ebook downloaded for free via Amazon.

Release Date: December 18th 2014

Publisher: Metal Blonde Books

Description:
It all started with a pinky swear…

Linden McGregor is tall, rugged, and gunslinger handsome; a helicopter pilot with a Scottish brogue and charm to spare. He’s also one of Stephanie Robson’s best friends and has fit into that box for as long as she’s known him.

But some relationships can’t be boxed, can’t be classified, can’t be tamed.

Back in their mid-twenties and tired of the competitive hit-or-miss dating scene of San Francisco, Steph and Linden made a pact to marry each other if neither one of them are in a serious relationship by the time they hit thirty.

It sounds like fun and games but as the years to thirty tick past and lovers come and go out of their lives, the pact becomes larger than life.
Sex is inevitable. Friendships are tested. Hearts are on the line.

The pact is about to change everything.

My Opinion

I enjoyed this read. I had seen mixed reviews on it when I downloaded it, but having heard so many good things about the author I decided to give it a go.

The Pact was a gentle read filled with a lot of humour and a little angst. I love the friends to lovers trope in book and that's what this was. There was a little twist due to the marriage pact, but overall I thought the author did a good job of pulling off the romance. I thought it built nicely, but more importantly, Linden and Stephanie worked together. I believed in their friendship and they felt close.

Overall, an enjoyable easy read. I'll definitely be checking out this author's other work.

When confronted with secrets and deadly agendas threatening the lives of those she loves most, will Christianna leave Nico?

Or will she discover she can’t walk away…

My Opinion

I won this book back when it was released, but I never got around to reading it. I was skimming through my list of freebies when I found it again and thought I'd give it ago even though I had completely forgotten what it was about.

Due to the fact I didn't look it up to remind myself of the blurb, I went into this book blind and I was surprised by what I got. I didn't expect a mafia romance based on the cover, but it was a nice surprise. I had just been thinking about trying to find one since that was what I was in the mood for.

Anyway, this book held my attention brilliantly. I liked the story, the emotions, and the characters. It all unravelled well and the the suspense element kept me intrigued. I got through this book a lot quicker than I expected because I couldn't put it down.

Nico was a complex character for me to understand. There were clearly two sides to him--loving family man and then mafia boss. I thought the author did a good job of creating a likeable character with a dark undercurrent. The mafia element didn't overpower this book and the balance between light and dark was good. There was also plenty of chemistry and hear between Nico and Christianna.

My only minor complaint is a few times I wished events hadn't been repeated from both characters' points of view. I hate it when authors do this because it slow the pace of the story and is generally unnecessary. Reactions and actions from the character narrating are enough to know their thoughts, I don't need to re-read the events from their view too. However; I was pleased the author didn't do this with every chapter.

Overall, I didn't expect to get what I did with this book based on the cover, but I couldn't have been more pleased. It held my attention and drew me into this author's world easily.

Review ~ Lady and the Champ by Katherine Lace

Lady and the Champebook downloaded for free via Amazon.

Release Date: July 3rd 2016

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
He’s a single dad, and he needs a lady

I massage naked guys for a living, but it’s strictly business. As a physical therapist, I get my hands on the hottest guys in sports, but I’m a professional. I have rules.

And I’m *this* close to breaking every one of them.

It’s all his fault: Austin “The Champ” Sherwood, the gorgeous football god. He’s most valuable on the field, and most desired in the bedroom. He’s my obnoxious patient. I hate him. I want him. But we’re forced together as he's recovering from a season-ending injury.

Rejecting him should be easy. I shouldn’t want to date a client, but my heart melts when I see him with his baby daughter. A football god who’s not a player? He's a dream-come-true, but I can’t date him. Our forbidden romance could get me fired.

But what will we lose if we walk away?

My Opinion

So I was really enjoying this book. Seriously, I loved everything about it. Then the author went and did something irritating with the ending that overrode all my happy feelings.

I'll start with the good points. I loved the story. The writing was great, the humour was on point, and the banter and tension between Chloe and Austin was amusing. I loved how Austin pushed the boundaries. His comments were funny and well-timed. Similarly, I liked Chloe and I enjoyed watching her fight her attraction. Together they both worked well and bounced off one another to great a likeable relationship that was surrounded by a great plot.

Honestly, I really can't fault the writing or the characters. I've never read anything by this author before and it surprised me how quickly I got through the book.

However--and this is a big however--what irritated me most was to read the epilogue of this book you have to sign up to this author's newsletter. Now, I didn't mind this. I enjoyed the book so thought what the hell, I'm happy to hear more from the author. However, after going to all of the hassle to sign up and download the book, I found it only to be a few pages. It ended up feeling like a cheap publicity trick because if you're going to write a book and extend the ending, I want at least a few chapters extra not a couple of pages that should have been in the original book to give a satisfying conclusion. I'm sorry, I'm all for subscribers getting exclusive content, but I don't expect to invest hours of my time into a book then be told to read the last few pages I have to sign up to something. Write a new book, write a spin off, hell write a short story. Don't give me a couple pages of the ending which should be included in a book so that it's a complete story you buy. I will mostly likely be unsubscribing for that.

Anyway, I wish that ending hadn't overshadowed a great read. I really enjoyed the book. I just hate it when authors use cheap marketing tactics to build a newsletter. It ruined the end of the book for me with the hassle of having to download a few pages.

Overall, loved the story and then the author ruined it. It recommend the read, but don't bother with the extended epilogue. It wasn't worth the hassle since the ending didn't add much in the way of satisfaction.

With the crime family boss quickly spiraling out of control, Xander is forced into action. Someone has to die, but who will it be? His brother or his lover, his darkness or his light? Find out in this dark and sexy romance inspired by Romeo & Juliet.

My Opinion

It was the rival family and forbidden romance element to this book that caught my interest.

In general it was an okay read. It was a lot shorter than the usual books in this genre at a novella length. However, it did hold my interest. I thought the story was interesting, I just wish there had been more to it.

Because of the length I thought there were major chunks of story missed out and ends left untied. The ending didn't answer all of my questions, and it was disappointing because there could have been so much more to this read to make it great.

Overall I liked the idea, I just wish there had been more story to flesh it out into a full length novel.

Review ~ Holding Out (Hawks Motorcycle Club, #1) by Lila Rose

Holding Out (Hawks Motorcycle Club, #1)
ebook downloaded for free via Amazon.

Release Date: December 3rd 2013

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
Zara Edgingway is a twenty-six year old secretary. She has a daughter that apparently knows it all and a best friend that could possibly have the mouth of Satan, but she's been with her through hell and back. Then there's the hunk'a'licious biker neighbor finally showing interest in her. If only she wasn't about to face her next obstacle in life, the one she ran from six years ago; her ex-husband.

Talon Marcus is the president of the Hawks Motorcycle Club. For two years he's had his eye on the quiet, reclusive, yet sassy, neighbor Zara. Finally, he has the chance to claim her as his woman. Just when her past catches up with her, she'll need, not only his protection, but the help from his biker brothers.

Now, if only she'd stop fighting him along the way.

My Opinion

I don't usually read many MC books, and it takes a lot for one of them to capture my interest as they're not my preferred romance. However, it was the kids that caught my eye and made me take a chance on this. The book didn't sound too MC but rather like it had a bit more depth from the blurb, and since it was free I thought I'd give it a go.

Holding Out held attention my well in the end. I thought the book was paced well and that there was the right amount of suspense balanced with humour and alpha-ness. I was surprised by the humour in this book. At times it was a little over the top and some of the characters were more of a caricature, but it did make me smile.

As for the relationship, I liked Talon. He was hot and a clear alpha. He might have been bossy, but it was clear he was a good guy. Zara softened him, but also stood up to him and so did the kids. There was definitely a spark between them both and chemistry. I liked watching their relationship evolve.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. I was glad I took a chance on it and I will be looking at the next books in the series.

Review ~ Rush (The Boys of RDA, #1) by Megan Matthews

Rush (The Boys of RDA, #1)ebook downloaded for free via Amazon.

Release Date: March 7th 2016

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
San Francisco is heating up for Aspen Adams this summer.

With grad school under my belt I’m ready to start the next chapter of my life. San Francisco is a brand new city. I have an amazing apartment, a new job, family, and friends to keep me occupied. Life in the city will be easy.

Keep my head down, don’t break any of the ridiculous rules in my lease agreement, get my best friend through her nasty relationship drama, and stick to my five year plan. I’ve got this. Or at least I would if I could figure out why my heart skips a beat every time I see my hot neighbor.

Handsome, funny, and always around right when I need him, Finnegan McRyan is my own personal knight in shining armor. The tousled hair and sexy glasses don’t hurt his appeal either. Finn acts like the perfect man, but there’s something about him that has me questioning if it’s too good to be true.

Can I count on him when it really matters or is Finn using his good guy image to hide the truth?

My Opinion

This was a quick and easy read. Having not read anything by this author before I wasn't sure what I'd be getting, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I enjoyed the author's style in this book. Her writing was laid back and and she created two likeable characters who I wanted to root for. I liked that they broke some of the typical genre tropes due to Finn being a gamer. I liked his nerdy side, but he also had a slight alpha side in the bedroom. I thought the author struck the balance well to create a rounded character that felt like a genuine guy. He was sweet and kind and I just fell in love with him.

Overall, this was a sweet and easy read to chill out with. I would definitely recommend it and will be reading more.

Review ~ Royally Wrong by Teagan Kade

Royally Wrong
ebook downloaded for free via Amazon.

Release Date: February 20th 2016

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
Fifth in line to the throne.
Off the rails.
Drop dead-freakin’-gorgeous.

I should never have taken this assignment. Prince Panty-Dropper Spencer and his ‘Big Ben’ are too far gone. Even my journalistic wonders aren’t enough to pull him from the public blacklist. He’s a playboy, an arrogant, cocky as*hole in the extreme and the kind of overt man candy that goes against every one of my golden rules.

But I want him all the same, crave his cursed touch. I won’t have a job to go back to if I leave empty-handed, which means we’re going to have to get real close, access all areas. He’s a prick, yes, but I can’t stop thinking about his hard muscles, his slack smile, the complete confidence he has in himself. He might be Britain’s biggest player, but if he wants me, he’s damn well going to have to work for it.

London’s calling alright. Question is, can I handle what’s on the line?

My Opinion

My feelings about this book come down to two things: I liked the story, wasn't such a fan of the execution.

Personally, I felt the plot was good in this book ; it was what kept me reading. I'm going through a royal phase right now so it was perfect in that regard. I liked how Spencer and Grace fought each other, I thought there was chemistry, and liked watching the drama unfold.

However, I wasn't a fan of the writing. I've read this author's work before and enjoyed it so this came down to the fact she decide to write British characters. Being English, I just found the language contrived and dated. I can handle a few stereotypes, but the author overdid it in this book to the point I was cringing. It didn't feel natural as a Brit, but rather based on this ridiculous media version put out by Hollywood and other press outlets.

Another issue I had was that while a lot happens in this book, I didn't feel all of the loose ends were tied up. I was left with quite a few questions, such as, what was Grace's plan, did she follow through, what of Alexander? All of the palace drama seemed to fizzle out and the loose ends were just ignored.

Moreover, I think this book needs to be proof read again. A few times there were large sections of highlighted words, crossed out sentences, and addition. It was as if someone had used track changes and forgot to apply them in Word so they've translated into the manuscript.

Overall, my feelings are the same. I liked the plot, had problems with the execution.

Review ~The Player by Claire Contreras

The Player
ebook recevied for free by signing up to Claire's newsletter.

Release Date: October 10th 2016

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
I'm naturally gifted on the field and between the sheets. With flashy cars and enough media attention to put the Royal Family to shame, I’m the definition of Most Eligible Bachelor.

I've never met a man who doesn't want to be me or a woman who doesn't want to tame me. Until I meet Camila.

From the moment I lay eyes on her, I know I have to have her.

She wants to keep me at arm's length.
I want her naked in my bed.

She thinks our worlds are too different.
All I want her to think about is screaming my name.

She says I’m bad news.

I have three weeks to prove her wrong.

My Opinion

Really enjoyed this book.

I got it free by signing up to the author's newsletter so I didn't know what it was about and downloaded it base on the cover and tag line. While that can sometimes be a hit or miss way to decided on a book, I was glad when this was definitely a hit.

The romance was sweet with sparks between the characters. I thought the author did well with the different nations. Although Warren was a New Yorker, he'd been living in England since he was fourteen. I was glad the author included subtle differences, but didn't go down the stereotypical route. Being a Brit, I hate it when authors do that, and Claire struck the right balance.

Together I liked the dynamic of the characters. I did predict a few twists, but the plot kept me engaged.

Overall, this isn't this first book I've read by this author and it won't be the last. I preferred it to her other series and it's a standalone!

Pretending was better than knowing the truth...
I. Ruined. Us.
I had her.
I lost her.
I love her.
All I did was complicate us.

My Opinion

I didn't know what to expect from this book. I've never read anything by this author, but the book was free and sounded like it would be a roller coaster read. I didn't expect for it to draw me in as much as it did, but I couldn't put it down.

This read was an up and down book. It built me up just to break me and then build me up again. Lucas and Alex were stuck in this cycle of hurting each other and fighting their attraction--and yes, I wanted to bang their heads together sometimes. Their friendship ran deep. The bond they had was clear and so were their feelings. I'm not sure enjoy is the right world to describe reading about their romance ... It held my attention, kept me engaged, and drew a number of emotions from me. At times it was painful, I wanted them to wake up so much, but I thought the author did a brilliant job of creating that connection that tugged on my heartstrings.

Overall, I will definitely be reading the next book. I would highly recommend this.
