ARC Review ~ Soren: The Angel & The Prize Fighter by Louise Nicks

Soren: The Angel & The Prize FightereARC received from the author in exchange for an honest review

Release Date: June 16th 2014

Publisher: Self-published

Description:
The world has never been an easy place for impoverished teen Beau Tolson, but from the moment her sick mother is given months to live, Beau’s life takes an extraordinary turn.

In order to buy the only drug that can now keep her beloved mother alive, 16 year old martial arts champion Beau resorts to illegal prize fighting at East London’s most notorious underworld lair.

But that’s only the beginning of her troubles.

When some of her closest friends start acting weird, and a mystifying new boy turns up outside the school gates, Beau is told a life changing secret... That not only are some of her friends angels, but that she is going to become an angel too.

It isn’t long before she finds herself torn between the divine and this world; between her responsibilities and the colossal destiny that awaits.

Little do any of them know that a sect of ex-angels have also come to Earth, planning on kidnapping Beau for the very same reasons the angels want her: to fulfill a prophecy that involves this world and theirs, and who will rule it all until the end of time.

My Opinion

This book reminded me of all the reasons I hate and love advanced copies. First of all I love them because I get to read book before everyone else. However, it also means I have to wait even longer for the sequels which isn't fair when you read a book that engages you so completely like this one did.

I have been looking for books with fighters in recently so when the author asked me to review Soren and I saw it had fighters, romance and a paranormal aspect I couldn't refuse. What more could you want from a book? I have read a lot of angel books though, after going through a major phase, and I thought I had reached the point where I had ODed because I found I wasn't engaging as well with the same types of characters. This was the only aspect of the book that worried me going in but I was pleasantly surprised to find the Louise made the book both current and original. The fighter element had a lot to do with this and the darker undertone to the criminal world added a deeper level of story you could sink your teeth into and enjoy. It meant the constant focus wasn't on the angels which I liked as the book didn't revolve solely around myths/legends/stories that are already written about angels.

Although there is a lot of unanswered questions in what is happening in the angel world/war, the author cleverly wove the plot strands together so that it didn't matter. I'm guessing more will be revealed in the next book but because it is confidential information to Beau I never felt confused. The book works without it and it has built my intrigue into what is going to happen.

As well as this I really liked the character of Beau. She was strong, determined and she had a curious side that got her into trouble. She was also loyal to her friends and mother and for that you respect her. She fought so hard (emotionally and physically) for the ones she loved and I can't wait to she how she develops with her wings. Moreover, the rest of the characters were crafted well. They had their own voices, personalities and idiosyncrasies which did make me laugh. They too were also incredibly loyal to one another and I felt the overall emotions portrayed were believable which created a very engaging cast of characters you couldn't help but love.

The story around them built slowly but surely and reached a dramatic ending. From the offset Louise painted a great picture with her words and the narrative held my interest all of the way through. Last night I was up until 3am reading Soren and I would have loved to finish it but sadly a little thing called sleep got in the way so I had to pick it up this morning.

Anyway, overall Soren was a brilliant read and one of the best self-published books I have had the pleasure of being asked to review in a while. It was engaging, interesting, written incredibly well and I couldn't put it down. I'm so glad I got to read this before the release, however I don't want to wait for the next instalment! I'd highly recommend this books.
