ebook received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Release Date: 25th February 2014

Publisher: Harlequin Teen

Description:
One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

My Opinion

I kind of new what to expect from White Hot Kiss but on the other hand I didn't. I have only read New Adult fiction by this author under the name of J.Lynn and I love her books then so I wasn't sure what to expect with her Young Adult writing, especially with paranormal aspects.

However, I found White Hot Kiss to be a great read. It had original and unique concepts and characters that I have never come across before--something that is hard to say nowadays in the paranormal genre. Jennifer somehow managed it though and I loved the Warden/gargoyle aspect. Not only did it make it different but it was intriguing and exciting to read about.

As well as this, I liked the relationships between the characters. Zayne and Layla's relationship was believable and sweet and it was easy to believe he cared deeply for her. This also contrasted nicely with Layla and Roth's relationship which was hot, heavy and dangerous. I loved Roth's more playful and flirty side and how the bond between them grew and developed. The contrast in the relationships also highlighted Layla's struggle with the two sides of herself well. It allowed a sense of longing for Zayne to be created as she couldn't be with him like she could with Roth. I could really feel for Layla, she slowly came to terms with what she was but at the start I could sympathise well.

There was plenty of action in White Hot Kiss--more than I expected--and I really liked the demon aspect. I've kind of gone off Heaven/Hell books as they are pretty similar but Jennifer's world, ideas and characters were quite unique and different to a lot of books I've read. Maybe it was because the lines between good and bad were more blurred in this book, I don't know. However, I do know it was exciting and I couldn't put it down. There were also a few surprising moments that  didn't see coming.

The only criticism I have about White Hot Kiss is the ending. I wanted to scream in annoyance. It leads on into book two well, setting up that story nicely but I didn't like it. Rather than leave some parts resolved, it opened a whole new storyline and Roth was my favourite. It has me intrigued and I will mostly definitely buy book two, but it's still one of those endings that made me go "how can you do that to me!"

Overall, I really enjoyed White Hot Kiss. It had me up until the early hours of the morning because I couldn't put it down, it was full of action and for me a really unique paranormal book. I highly recommend!
